A benefit for this is that you can be prepared for extreme scenarios. But is it worth the time and effort to plan this much?

It really depends on the scenario. Sometime it makes sense to be very cautious for extreme scenarios that have potential for being very costly

Time obviously plays a part too. If you dont have enough time to plan, naturally you cut out the extreme cases.

I think people undervalue the concept in this article. Just look at the real world, why is it that most projects never meet deadlines and cost more than expected
